What is a perp DEX?

Definition: perpetual futures on a DEX

A perp DEX is a decentralised exchange for perpetual futures: leveraged contracts without an expiry date. You post collateral to a protocol and trade price exposure rather than owning the underlying asset. Self-custody means signing with your wallet; collateral committed to the protocol still depends on its withdrawal rules, contracts and chain.

Some venues have an on-chain order book; hybrid designs combine off-chain matching with on-chain settlement or proofs. The word “DEX” alone does not tell you who controls sequencing, upgrades or withdrawals. Oracle prices reference the underlying market; a mark price is used to value positions and trigger liquidations. Neither guarantees the price at which you can close.

Hyperliquid, Aster and Lighter

Hyperliquid runs an order book on its own chain, with publicly observable positions and hourly funding. Market makers quote against traders; HLP provides vault-backed liquidity and liquidation backstops, sharing gains and losses with depositors. HIP-3 builder-deployed markets extend the market set beyond the main exchange, including stock perps.

Aster offers order-book perpetual markets. Its mark price combines reference prices and market inputs rather than treating every last trade as fair value. Do not assume every perp DEX exposes positions like Hyperliquid: Aster's documentation emphasises privacy. Our ranking uses Aster's public futures API, and its OI coverage is partial.

Lighter is another order-book perp venue in our comparison. Its design uses cryptographic proofs to make execution and settlement verifiable. Verifiability does not remove oracle, liquidity or withdrawal risks. Our ranking aggregates its active perpetual markets from its public API.

How to compare perp DEXs

  • Open interest (OI) measures outstanding positions in USD. Compare the same one-sided convention and market coverage; bigger OI does not establish safety.
  • 24h volume measures recent trading activity, not resting liquidity. Check depth and slippage for the order size you plan to trade.
  • Vol/OI compares turnover with outstanding exposure. Our ranking uses volume from markets with known OI so partial coverage does not inflate the ratio.
  • Market count describes breadth, not liquidity in each market. Check the specific asset, funding interval, collateral and backstop.

Use the perp DEX ranking and its head-to-head pages: Aster vs Hyperliquid, Aster vs Lighter and Hyperliquid vs Lighter. Compare funding over the same time window, including fees.

Risks: oracle, liquidity, contracts and ADL

  • Oracle risk: delayed or manipulated reference prices can distort funding and liquidations.
  • Liquidity risk: a thin book can gap through stops. Vault-backed liquidity such as HLP can lose money and cannot guarantee a fill.
  • Contract and chain risk: bugs, upgrade keys, bridges, sequencer outages and withdrawal controls can put collateral at risk.
  • ADL: auto-deleveraging may close profitable opposing positions when normal liquidation backstops cannot absorb losses.
  • Public positions: transparency helps auditing but can expose liquidation levels and trading intent.

Limits of our coverage

We compare three tracked venues, not the entire DEX market. Aster OI covers only its top 30 markets by 24h volume, with failed reads further reducing coverage; the ranking states the share of volume those markets represent. Aster volume covers a broader set. Hyperliquid includes HIP-3 markets; Lighter covers active perps returned by its API.

The live box omits every venue whose status is not live. Its OI shares are copied from the ranking, whose denominator may include a stale venue, so the displayed shares may not sum to 100%. A cold or stale in-process view shows an unavailable note. Exchange data can be delayed or incomplete, and stablecoin quotes are treated as dollars. These figures are for comparison, not investment advice.

Perp DEX FAQ

What is a perp DEX?

A decentralised exchange for perpetual futures: contracts without expiry, traded with collateral committed to a protocol. Custody, execution and settlement designs vary.

Are all perp DEX order books on-chain?

No. Some match orders on-chain; hybrid systems combine off-chain execution with on-chain settlement or proofs. Check who can order transactions, halt trading and authorise withdrawals.

Do perp DEXs charge funding every hour?

Hyperliquid settles funding hourly. Other venues and markets can use different intervals; compare rates over the same period before comparing their cost.

Does higher open interest mean a safer DEX?

No. Open interest measures outstanding exposure, not solvency, contract safety or executable liquidity. Compare depth, slippage, backstops and withdrawal controls too.

What does Aster open interest cover here?

Our ranking reads Aster open interest for its 30 largest markets by 24h volume. Unread markets are excluded, so the figure is partial; volume covers a broader market set.
