Bitcoin halving FAQ

When was the last Bitcoin halving?

On 20 April 2024 (block 840,000), which cut the block reward from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC. Earlier halvings were on 28 November 2012, 9 July 2016 and 11 May 2020.

When is the next Bitcoin halving?

Halvings come every 210,000 blocks, about every four years, so the next one (block 1,050,000) is expected around early-to-mid 2028 (block 1,050,000). This page uses a fixed estimate, not a live block height.

How is the chart calculated?

Each line is the daily Bitcoin close divided by the close on halving day, so every cycle starts at 1×. The x axis is days since the halving. Closes are Binance BTCUSDT daily candles (UTC), so history starts in August 2017 and the 2016 halving appears as a partial row without returns.

Does Bitcoin always rise after a halving?

Past cycles each peaked well above the halving-day price, but there are only a few of them, the returns shrank cycle to cycle and nothing guarantees a repeat.
