Binance and Bybit USDⓈ-M perpetual order books (USDT pairs), one REST snapshot every 60 seconds, summed into price bins. Orders that appear and vanish within a minute (spoofing) are mostly missed. Hyperliquid is not included yet. Grey cells were beyond the depth the books returned (not observed, not empty); past Bybit's depth a bin holds Binance orders only.

What does the ADA liquidity heatmap show?

Resting limit orders: the USD value of bids (buy orders, below the price) and asks (sell orders, above it) waiting in the Binance and Bybit perpetual order books at each price, minute by minute. Bright horizontal bands are large orders that stayed in the book; a band that ends is an order that was filled or pulled. It is exchange data, not a model.

Is this the same as a liquidation heatmap?

No. A liquidation heatmap estimates where leveraged positions would be force-closed; nobody places those orders in advance. This page shows orders that really sit in the book. Compare the two: the ADA liquidation heatmap shows the modelled liquidation levels.

Why is the coloured band so narrow, and what are the grey areas?

The exchanges' public REST order books return a fixed number of levels (1,000 on Binance, 500 on Bybit). For BTC and ETH, whose books are dense, that reaches only about 0.15 to 0.4% either side of the price, so the heatmap is a narrow band that follows the price. Grey means not observed (beyond the depth the books returned), not empty. Past Bybit's depth, a bin holds Binance orders only.

How often is it updated, and what does it miss?

One snapshot of both books every 60 seconds; the 12- and 24-hour ranges show every minute, the 7-, 30- and 90-day ranges average them into 15-minute, 1-hour and 4-hour columns. Orders that are placed and cancelled within a minute, a common spoofing pattern, are mostly missed. Hyperliquid's book is not included yet.
